August 2007 Denong Wang, M.D., Ph.D., Donna Peehl, Ph.D., Thomas Stamey, M.D., Leonore A Herzenberg, Ph.D., Leonard A. Herzenberg, Ph.D., and Philip Lavori, Ph.D. were awarded funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), for research their cutting edge research on the glycobiology of cancer. Arvin, M.D. , Lucile Salter Packard Professor of Pediatrics, Vice Provost and Dean of Research and Professor of Microbiology & Immunology, has been elected to serve a four-year term on the NIAID Council. June 2007 Justin I. Odegaard (MSTP) and Roberto Ricardo-Gonzales (M.D., Ph.D. candidate) published a paper on macrophage PPAR-gamma and insulin resistance in Nature. Amy Palin, a Ph.D. candidate in Dr. David Lewis's lab, received an honorable mention for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Luis Zuniga, a Ph.D. candidate in Dr. Eugene Butcher's lab, received an NIH Predoctoral Fellowship. Justin I. Odegaard (MSTP), Eon Rios (MSTP), and Amy Radermacher (Ph.D. candidate) are recipients of the 2007 Biosciences Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Sheri M. Krams, Ph.D. was reappointed to Associate Professor (Research) of Surgery. April 2007 Dr. Alex Bankovich, Ph.D., a graduate of Dr. Chris Garcia's lab, published papers in Science and also in Cell, on pre-B cell receptor function and TCR-MHC recognition, respectively. February 2007 Dr. Olivia M. Martinez, Ph.D., has been promoted to Professor (Research) of Surgery. November 2006 Irving L. Weissman, M.D., Virginia & D.K. Ludwig Professor for Clinical Investigation in Cancer Research, Professor of Dev Bio & by courtesy of Neurosurgery & Biological Sciences, will receive the John Scott Award and the American Italian Cancer Foundation Award. Dr. Shoshana Levy, Ph.D. was reappointed to Professor (Research) of Medicine (Oncology). Dr. William Robinson M.D., Ph.D. was reappointed to Assistant Professor of Medicine (Immunology & Rheumatology). October 2006 Maria Vaysberg, an Immunology Ph.D. student, has been selected as one of the first two Mason Case Fellows. Maria is analyzing the contribution of the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) latent gene LMP1 to the Jak/STAT pathway and IL-10 signaling in B cell lymphomas. Born in Moscow, Maria graduated from UC Berkeley with honors in molecular biology and distinction in scholarship. Her thesis research is conducted in the laboratory of Professor Olivia Martinez (of the Department of Surgery and the Program in Immunology). Maria's research has been published in the American Journal of Transplantation, Nature and Science. In addition to her thesis research, Maria is recognized for excellence in teaching in the Advanced Immunology Course, particularly for her teaching of B cell development. September 2006 Recently published research by Bill Robinson, M.D., Ph.D. and Ricardo Paniagua, an M.D./Ph.D. student, on Gleevec and rheumatoid arthritis is described in the Stanford Report. They are also cited in a WebMD Medical News publication, among other citations, regarding their research on Gleevec and rheumatoid arthritis. Mark Davis, Ph.D., Burt and Marion Avery Professor in Immunology, has been selected as an Ellison Medical Foundation Senior Scholar in Aging for 2006. July 2006 Immunology faculty members are involved in the planning of Stanford's Clinical and Translational Award application that will be submitted in January 2007, discussed in the July 2006 issue of the Dean's Newsletter. Among them are Ann Arvin, M.D. and Alan Krensky, M.D. June 2006 Dr. Len Herzenberg was awarded the 22nd annual Kyoto Prize. The Kyoto Prize is "Japan's highest private award for lifetime achievement, presented to individuals and groups worldwide who have contributed significantly to humankind's betterment" -- ISAC May 2006 Robert Rafael Ricardo-Gonzalez, an Immunology M.D./Ph.D. student, was awarded the Student Gores Awards for Teaching Assistants, as noted in the May 30th issue of the Dean's Newsletter. Peter Lee, M.D., was among the 64 new members recently elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation, an honor society of physician-scientists founded in 1908 to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the translation of knowledge from the laboratory to the advancement of clinical practice. Ludwig Professor for Clinical Investigation in Cancer Research, Professor of Dev Bio & by courtesy of Neurosurgery & Biological Sciences, and Director of the Institute for Cancer/Stem Cell Biology and Medicine, will receive an honorary doctor of science degree from Columbia University. Dr. Weissman's research extends to the possible stem cell origins of leukemias and other malignancies and has spawned new designs for more effective cancer therapies. April 2006 Ajay Chawla, M.D., Ph.D., has been reappointed to Assistant Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology, Gerontology and Metabolism) effective 4/01/06 Pavan Bachireddy, a medical student conducting research in Dean Felsher's lab, was among 13 students chosen to receive a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) fellowship award. March 2006 Robert Negrin, M.D., Professor of Medicine (Bone Marrow Transplantation), has been recently instated as the President of the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation Society.
